It’s not just Amazon changing the grocery shopping game anymore. Now in Milan, Italy, shoppers will find an augmented reality supermarket.
“The Supermarket Of The Future” has found its home in Coop Italia, the country’s largest grocery chain, and expands 10,800 square feet with some 6,000 products organized on interactive shelves and tables.
Designed by MIT designer and Senseable City Lab director Carlo Ratti, the high-tech store provides shoppers with up-to-date information about the products they’re buying via activated motion sensors that initiate screens above them. The screens will then display information about an item, including allergens, nutritional facts, and even waste disposal instructions. There are also over 50 monitors on a separate wall that promote sustainable consumption, top selling products, cooking suggestions, and more.
But Ratti said there’s still room for improvement.
“Today, this information reaches the consumer in a fragmented way. But in the near future, we will be able to discover everything there is to know about the apple we are looking at: the tree it grew on, the CO2 it produced, the chemical treatments it received, and its journey to the supermarket shelf,” he said in a press release.
Even without those improvements, this supermarket is not something you want to skip out on!
